From Paint to Page: An Ekphrastic Writing Group
Ekphrasis is a Greek word meaning ‘description’. In its most basic form, it is a description of a work of art, but there are many varieties of this. The simplest, and most open definition is this: a piece of writing written in response to a visual work of art.
The group will focus mainly on poetry, but prose writers are also welcome.
Each month we’ll complete a short writing exercise and discuss a published example of ekphrastic poetry. We’ll also take inspiration from the art on display in The Gate, and have a go at writing something in response.
There’ll be an opportunity to share work written in the workshop, and gain constructive feedback.
The group will be run by myself (Rachel Carney). I’m a poet, blogger and freelance writer, and a member of the Roath Writers group (which also meets at The Gate). I’ve had ekphrastic poems published in The High Window Journal and Sarasvati Magazine, and I regularly review fiction, poetry and literary events.
