The Wedding Present have had eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles… not bad for a band that has, from its inception, stubbornly refused to play the record industry’s game. In 1985 David Lewis Gedge boarded a National Express coach in London with 500 records packed into a pair of his mother’s suitcases and, in this fashion, the band’s debut single GO OUT AND GET ‘EM BOY! was delivered to the distribution company and The Wedding Present was born. That pioneering spirit has been at the core of the band’s philosophy ever since. From GEORGE BEST, “an unmitigated delight” [NME], the first full-length release on their own Reception Records onwards, the band has charted an appealing, if often eccentric, course of its very own.

With their early releases The Wedding Present had acquired a reputation for bittersweet, breathtakingly honest love songs immersed in whirlwind guitars, so it was extraordinary that UKRAINSKI VISTUPI V JOHNA PEELA, with the band exploring traditional Eastern European folk music, should be their major label debut on RCA. “(They) carry off what is basically a bold experiment with verve” [NME]. However, this was soon followed by the more traditionally incendiary BIZARRO, “simply unbeatable” [Melody Maker] which featured their first hit single KENNEDY.

We would like to bring a great variety of artworks to the heart of Roath with an Open Exhibition. As a community orientated Arts Centre, The Gate will accept submissions from anyone of any background or age. All mediums (apart from 3D work) will be considered.

Closing date for submissions is 18^th May and entry fee is £10 for each artwork.  The opening will be on 24^th May and the exhibition will continue until 15^th June.

‘The Jackie Generation’ are a 6 piece ‘totally live’ 70’s tribute show with both male & female lead vocals. Featuring the incredible ‘Cat suited wondergirl’ Janey Bombshell, arguably one of the finest female singers in the UK. Janey adds some real ‘Agnetha glamour’ alongside co-lead vocalist Mark Keen, singing sensation with ‘The Blunter Brothers’ & ‘Boogie Wonderland’. A figurehead for the movement and all that it encompassed, John Cooper Clarke became the “Punk Poet”, “The Bard of Salford” who found himself as one of the leading voices of punk and youth culture of the late 70s. Live he would find himself performing to thousands across the UK, crowds gathered with open eyes and ears gazing up at his distinctive, and now iconic visual appearance (tall and thin with a mess of black hair, black sunglasses, drainpipe trousers and cuban-heeled boots) all transfixed as he worked through a catalogue of work taken from his four studio albums and numerous singles.

The revival of the 70s punk phenomenon over the last few years has seen a whole new generation clamouring over John’s work and watched his star rocket once again. A series of shows on leading new music station BBC Radio 6, which John presented, an appearance in the award winning Ian Curtis biopic Control (where he plays his younger self).

No bigger accolade and platitude of his work is that no less than 3 of his poems are now in the GCSE syllabus, including the remarkable Twat. He is studied by many A level students and his poetry is prolific within UK and Irish
University courses, all ensuring that he will be forever ingrained in the psyche of Britain’s new youth.

One of Britain’s best loved and most important poets and performers, John is as vital now as he was then.

Taking place every second Tuesday of the month from 8pm – 10pm at The Gate Arts Centre, Keppoch Street, Cardiff, Theology Café is led by experts in varied academic fields who will help us engage with some big questions. Eric Clapton is undoubtedly one of the UK’s most prolific blues guitar players with his music spanning five decades. Hit’s covered in this great new show include ‘Wonderful Tonight’, ‘Cocaine’, ‘I Shot The Sheriff’ and many more.  One of the most popular collaborations occurred in September 1968, when Clapton added guitar to George Harrison’s composition, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’.

George Harrison forged a highly successful solo career following on from the Beatles split in 1970. Included from Harrison’s amazing repertoire is ‘Something’, quoted by Sinatra as ‘one of the best love songs of the last 50 years’, also ‘Isn’t It A Pity’, ‘My Sweet Lord’ and ‘Here Comes The Sun’, plus many more favourites.

All tracks are performed live by some of the UK’s most talented musicians, headed up by American Blues and Rock Guitarist, Midnite Johnny.

Since Johnny starting playing in 1975 he’s fast become one of South Florida’s hottest musicians, whose resume includes working with Bo Diddley, Harvey Mandel to name a few. A lead/slide guitarist and vocalist specializing in Blues, Blues Rock and Classic Rock with a guitar style reminiscent of Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Freddie King and Buddy Guy and a slide style reminiscent of Muddy Waters and Elmore James

Saint Etienne are an indie dance/indie pop trio which formed in Croydon, England in 1990. The band was founded by journalist Bob Stanle (born December 25, 1964) and Pete Wiggs (born May 15, 1966) in Croydon, UK, January 1990. After recording 2 singles with  guest singers, Sarah Cracknell (born April 12, 1967, Chelmsford, Essex) joined as a full member. The band is named after a French football team.

Saint Etienne are one of the bands who defined the early 90s indie dance genre, fusing the production values of the dance-pop that emerged in the wake of the Second Summer of Love with the clever lyrics and self-aware production of indie music.

The much-loved trio are returning with a new single ‘Tonight’, followed closely by a new album in 2012

Like the album it’s taken from, Tonight is all about the primal and atavistic pull that all good pop music exerts, about how the unadulterated thrill of a great band or gig can sometimes feel like a hotline straight to your heart.

The track is produced by Xenomania lynchpin TIm Powell (Girls Aloud, Kylie, Sugababes), and mixed by Richard X, and in Bob’s own words, “Tonight is about the anticipation of going to see your favourite group. For some reason, I imagine this show is at the Forum in Kentish Town. The whole album is about the power of pop, how it affects and shapes your life.”

Richard D. Hall presents one of the most controversial shows on television. Looking into hidden truths behind subjects which mainstream media are either too lazy or too corrupt to cover. The TV show airs weekly on Sky Channel 201, Fridays at 8:00pm. Richard is not afraid to “say it how it is”, by using intelligence and an engineers critical thinking along with a sledgehammer sense of humour heexposes the massive lies we are being drip fed in our tightly controlled mainstream news and media. Limehouse Lizzy have been officially named one of the hardest working acts in the UK, alongside some of the country’s biggest & most popular performers. They were accredited for their live shows by the Performing Rights Society in December 2011, and recieved their award from PRS Chairman and Ivor Novello award-winning songwriter (Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Tom Jones) Guy Fletcher OBE.
Renowned for an action-packed pyrothechnic-fuelled explosion of a show, Limehouse Lizzy continue to keep the spirit of Celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive, well and dominating stages worldwide. The band have also added a tribute in their set to the late Gary Moore (ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist and world renowned solo artist) who sadly passed away last year.

Attention to detail, playful audience interaction and that all important X-factor that leaves you with the feeling of witnessing the real thing have led to their performance being described as “beyond tribute”, by both audience and critics alike.

Following the enormous success of their ˜Live & Dangerous” & ˜Dedication” tours, the band embarked upon their “Into the Limelight” tour to tie in with their appearance on an episode of BBC2’s ‘Arena’ documentary series of the same name.

The tour travelled as far as a headline slot at a rock festival in Greece, and the Virgin Atlantic Music festival in Barbados. The band appeared alongside diverse world music acts, and played a Thin Lizzy set representing the celtic rock genre.

In 2012 the band’s European tour continues to explore and celebrate the artistic and musical legacy of the hard-living, hard-rocking, yet at times surprisingly tender and romantic artist that was Philip Lynott. This year they will be appearing in the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Holland and Belgium.

Project Information

The Oasis Cardiff Engagement Gateway is designed to be distinctly people-centred; offering intensive and direct attention to people who are economically inactive (not claiming JSA or ESA). The programme aims to move each individual towards employment by building their experience, character and attitude, giving them work experience and developing their skills.

Oasis Cardiff are delivering this programme in partnership with the Gate Arts and Community Centre.

Each participant will have a personalised 10 week timetable which will include:

· work placements in different departments of The Gate Arts and Community Centre and other partner organisations;

· individual projects;

· regular one-to-one mentorship;

· participation in and leadership of weekly team meetings;

· presentation skills tuition and experience;

· intensive personal development through an award winning course;

· as well as diverse training opportunities.

Timetables will be tailored to each person, encompassing their strengths and reflecting their needs so as to challenge and develop; enabling personal growth and building confidence.

A Job Club specifically designed for the project will provide tuition and support in interview practice, CV writing and job hunting.

Work experience placements cover many areas of interest: from reception cover to bar work; from drama to IT; from youth work to administration and many more.

Some of the main duties and skills involved are:

The Gateway Programme works with unemployed young people, building their character, confidence and attitudes, giving them opportunity for work experience, training and skills. It has now been launched after 2 extremely successful pilot programmes, where 36 individuals have been on the programme and 77% of those who completed the programme have found employment.

We’ve seen a real change in people’s lives, where participants have significantly grown in confidence and have had the time and support to think about their future and plan out and achieve the steps to reach where they want to go. As part of this we’ve had the pleasure of taking on and teaching the Personal Development Course, a course accredited by OCN and equivalent to an NVQ level 1. Our thanks to the team at Gate Training & Going Public.

Ballet is fantastically fun and challenging at the same time. We offer a wide choice of ballet classes in a variety of skill-levels. Our primary classes work to prepare children for entry to Royal Academy of Dance exams. Pre-primary, primary, grades 1-3 currently taught.

Research shows that singing can play an important part in the “bonding process”  between baby and parent. Letting your child feel the beat being tapped on parts of their  body can help them develop the coordination to respond to it themselves.Classes last 30 minutes.

The fun structure of these classes enables your toddlers to explore music in a framework from which they can develop and consolidate musical concepts. Each child has their own box of instruments.

Reminders of the devastating power of earthquakes have been all too common in recent years, but how far are we from truly understanding them? Professor Chris MacLeod will outline these issues and discuss how modern tools are allowing scientists to see what is happening during and between earthquakes – leading to a greater understanding of how and why they occur. Title: How to Be an Existentialist

Presented by Gary Cox, author of How to Be an Existentialist (Continuum 2009), recently published in paperback. Centring on an attack on contemporary “excuse culture”, the presentation, like the book, urges us to face the hard existential truths of the human condition. It uncompromisingly counsels us to become tougher and more dignified, less grumbling and irresponsible, to stop chasing rainbows and making excuses and instead to get a grip and get real.

By revealing that we are all inescapably free and responsible – ‘condemned to be free’, as Jean-Paul Sartre says – the presentation aims to empower people with a sharp sense that we are each the master of our own destiny.

As usual, the Cafe will be in the Cafe Bar at The Gate on Keppoch Street, from 8.00pm. After a successful trial at the Cafe in January, Glenn Davidson from Artstation will be running an interactive TXT2 installation on the evening to accompany the discussion.

It aims to exploit the enthusiasm of academic philosophers and social scientists for their subject to create stimulating debates in which anyone can participate.  Topics up for discussion will range from the ethics of global warming to the nature of democracy and freedom, and from corporate social responsibility to the rights and wrongs of new technologies such as genetic engineering and nanotechnology.
