Age : 14+

Saint Etienne are an indie dance/indie pop trio which formed in Croydon, England in 1990. The band was founded by journalist Bob Stanle (born December 25, 1964) and Pete Wiggs (born May 15, 1966) in Croydon, UK, January 1990. After recording 2 singles with guest singers, Sarah Cracknell (born April 12, 1967, Chelmsford, Essex) joined as a full member. The band is named after a French football team.

Saint Etienne are one of the bands who defined the early 90s indie dance genre, fusing the production values of the dance-pop that emerged in the wake of the Second Summer of Love with the clever lyrics and self-aware production of indie music.

The much-loved trio are returning with a new single ‘Tonight’, followed closely by a new album in 2012

Like the album it’s taken from, Tonight is all about the primal and atavistic pull that all good pop music exerts, about how the unadulterated thrill of a great band or gig can sometimes feel like a hotline straight to your heart.

The track is produced by Xenomania lynchpin TIm Powell (Girls Aloud, Kylie, Sugababes), and mixed by Richard X, and in Bob’s own words, “Tonight is about the anticipation of going to see your favourite group. For some reason, I imagine this show is at the Forum in Kentish Town. The whole album is about the power of pop, how it affects and shapes your life.”

Limehouse Lizzy have been officially named one of the hardest working acts in the UK, alongside some of the country’s biggest & most popular performers. They were accredited for their live shows by the Performing Rights Society in December 2011, and recieved their award from PRS Chairman and Ivor Novello award-winning songwriter (Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Tom Jones) Guy Fletcher OBE.
Renowned for an action-packed pyrothechnic-fuelled explosion of a show, Limehouse Lizzy continue to keep the spirit of Celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive, well and dominating stages worldwide. The band have also added a tribute in their set to the late Gary Moore (ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist and world renowned solo artist) who sadly passed away last year.

Attention to detail, playful audience interaction and that all important X-factor that leaves you with the feeling of witnessing the real thing have led to their performance being described as “beyond tribute”, by both audience and critics alike.

Following the enormous success of their ˜Live & Dangerous” & ˜Dedication” tours, the band embarked upon their “Into the Limelight” tour to tie in with their appearance on an episode of BBC2’s ‘Arena’ documentary series of the same name.

The tour travelled as far as a headline slot at a rock festival in Greece, and the Virgin Atlantic Music festival in Barbados. The band appeared alongside diverse world music acts, and played a Thin Lizzy set representing the celtic rock genre.

In 2012 the band’s European tour continues to explore and celebrate the artistic and musical legacy of the hard-living, hard-rocking, yet at times surprisingly tender and romantic artist that was Philip Lynott. This year they will be appearing in the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Holland and Belgium.
Expect more of the Celtic influenced tracks like ”Whisky in the Jar” and “Black Rose”, amongst the usual razzamatazz and classic tracks “The Boys are Back in Town”, “Sarah” and many others we’ve come to expect from one of the most highly rated acts on the circuit

From Glasgow, Scotland to Music City, Nashville USA, Raintown have already created quite a buzz in the music industry. Paul Bain and Claire McArthur, are a contemporary twist on a country duo. They have just returned from a much talked about and extremely successful performance at the CMA Global Party in Nashville. The show heralds the start of the biggest Country Music Festival in the world, CMA Fest!

This talented couple continue the tradition of exciting new music to emerge from Glasgow, with their catchy hooks and dynamic male/female harmonies are delivered with a passion that demands attention, while their carefully crafted lyrics articulate some very human emotions in a sincere, ‘heart on the sleeve’ kind of way.

This amazing show with a live band will showcase their own music along with some modern favourites; it’s easy to see why Raintown have been hailed as the hottest new act in British Country music.

Their performance was high-powered, charismatic, and a joy to behold. I could sense the ripples spreading through the room as everyone realised, “These people could be REALLY big…” – Pat Geary (Voice Of Country: Nashville)

Hailed (for the best of reasons) as Britain’s answer to Lady Antebellum – Stuart Cameron (Up Country Magazine, UK)

The incredible Sian Phillips, star of the Tony nominated Marlene in “Crossing Borders”, a new evening of songs including musical numbers by Leonard Berstein, Jacques Brel, Kurt Well, Rogers and Hart and Susan Werner, directed by Brendan O’ Hea, with musical direction by Kevin Amos.

“Sophistication triumphs, vibrant, intelligent, a wicked sense of humour…. a voice with the throb of mandolin. Take the nearest taxi and experience her fast, you will not see anything like her any time soon” Rex Reed, the New York Observer.

Cosmopolitan, droll and sometimes self-mocking, her collection of songs and backstage anecdotes created an enticing cocktail of pathos and humour. She commands the stage from the moment that she makes her entrance with pianist and music director Kevin Amos. The combination of Amos’s understated arrangements and her stately, recitative-like phrasing carries her through. Every song becomes an intensely personal statement. The London Times Review Jan 2011

Including Art by Caroline Seaman.

Mark Pinches aka Pin is a Cardiff based contemporary artist whose work is ‘semi-representational abstract’. He is inspired by nature’s forms, textures and colours. Pin experiments with replicating natural qualities using emotive colour, abstract shapes and surface texture to create visual metaphors from nature ranging from microscopic to subjective or non-objective mindscapes.

Pin’s work focuses principally on texture through the use of layered plaster coloured with a combination of oil, acrylic and wax creams and polishes. Pictures are waxed, brushed and polished to create a translucent quality that changes appearance depending on the light source and angle of viewing.

Paintings are not always abstracted from a physical motive but from mental constructs resulting from an interplay between experience of nature and the physical nature of rapidly applying quick setting plaster and the painting process itself. Mood and emotions always have a role prior to and during the process!

“As an abstract artist, all the formal aspects of painting, brush marks, colours, tones, layers of paint, surface texture and surface interfaces become means of addressing my experience of nature. Memories and previous experiences become fused with new constructs that arise during the development process and are often lead by the sub-conscious” Pin.

Caroline Seaman

My practise usually has an element of collage about it, in its broadest sense, whether installations, community based projects, embroidered paintings, drawings or sketch paintings, drawings or sketch books. The work often begins with found materials and objects: tickets, papers, seeds pieces of bark, old boilers etc! and is ‘mixed media’ in process.

This is my first outing on canvas, which stems in part from a desire to develop some ideas from densely layered sketch books and transfer them to a larger and more public format. Oil painting is relatively new ground for me. I wanted to combine it with a mixed media approach to see what could be gained aesthetically and conceptually.

Although the two paintings on display are very different, stylistically they have underpinning themes, revealed during the process, which colour them both.

My work is an exploration and expression of creativity and faith. Symbiotic parallels, both utterly absorbing; multi-faceted journeys, sometimes exhilarating, sometimes deeply difficult, a searching for, discovering and being met by completion.

April 2011 Restoration – community art installation at Thornhill Church Centre. Invited to continue as part of ‘Thank You Wales’ exhibition with 21 visiting Korean Artists.

July 2006 Holme Wood Bothy Residency, Lake District. On site installations with Helen Edling, Daniel Bevan, Tom Soare, Caroline Dalton and Iris Priest.

June 2006 The Last Supper. Community art installation at Cumbria Institute for the Arts.

Going Public Theatre Company introduces ‘The Tiger, the Snitch and the Chest of Drawers’, an adaptation of the much loved ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’.

You’ll be taken into the depths of Hernia, a forgotten land that lies beneath the Chest of Drawers. A quirky twist on the C.S. Lewis classic, it takes a fresh, new look at the unconditional love, second chances and the sacrifice made by one for the benefit of a whole world.

The show is aimed at primary school ages

With millions of album sales and concerts worldwide, Wishbone Ash’s heritage as one of the best loved British rock acts is assured. Martin Turner and Steve Upton, intent on creating a musical sound that was rich in texture and melody, Martin Turner envisaged the band’s innovative harmony-guitar hallmark and guitarists Ted Turner and Andy Powell were recruited via a now legendary Melody Maker advert. Wishbone Ash would become synonymous with high quality guitar-driven melodic rock music. Over four decades later, Wishbone Ash continues to delight audiences worldwide.

Explaining how it all came about, Colin said: “I wrote a short story for the Daily Mail all about coming to Oxford to study. It ran in the paper over three consecutive days. Morse did wonderfully at language and literature, but did not very much like philosophy or ancient studies, so he dropped out and joined the police. ITV came to me and said it would be marvellous if we could do something with those stories.”

A former Cabinet minister and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, he stood down in 1997 and was made a peer. One of the most prolific writers in Britain, Roy Hattersley was a Guardian columnist for 27 years and writes regularly for The Times. Author of twenty-three books, including The Edwardians, Borrowed Time, The Story of Britain between The Wars and Buster’s Diaries. A popular speaker, Roy Hattersley is a regular at literary events and a favourite with audiences.

A Welshman among the English, a nonconformist among Anglicans and a self-made man in the patrician corridors of power, David Lloyd George, the last Liberal Prime Minister of Great Britain was always regarded an outsider. Contempt for the establishment, conviction and self-confidence combined to make him the authentic radical of British history. In this remarkable biography “David Lloyd George – The Great Outsider”, Roy Hattersley shows how during sixteen continuous years in the cabinet, six of them as Prime Minister, Lloyd George changed Britain by founding the welfare state.

In 1982 the Sir Galahad was destroyed in Bluff Cove on the Falkland Islands. On board was Simon Weston, Welsh Guardsman, a name and face that was going to become well known for his struggle to overcome his injuries (46% burns) and redefine his role in life. Simon’s story has been well publicised and he has been the subject of five major BBC Television documentaries: Simon’s War, Simon’s Peace, Simon’s Triumph, Simon’s Return and in April 1999, Simon’s Journey.

Simon’s message is one of achievement, of triumph over adversity, of seizing the moment and succeeding.

Today Simon takes the opportunity to convey his story in order to motivate and encourage those, who like him, want to move on to the next goal, whatever it may be! The only obstacles to achieving one’s targets and successes are those you create for yourself. His words never fail to inspire you.

Simon’s irrepressible humour, infectious enthusiasm and immediately engaging personality, have made him the number one choice of many companies who invite him back to speak time and again. An inspiring and moving keynote speaker, Simon is also a wonderful and humorous after dinner speaker.

Please be aware the back of our new Brochure says 18th April, we apologise for any inconvience caused by this. The show date is the 28th April.

Tickets are now on sale – £16

Covering the Eagles music is not a thing you attempt half-heartedly. The songs are deceptively complex, particularly the vocal arrangements and more importantly, the songs are revered throughout the world. Ultimate Eagles recreate the music with reverence, excitement and with a new stage show that focuses its bright lights on the 1970s, when the Eagles were at their mightiest. You just might find yourself whisked away to the sunny climes of Southern California.

One look at the Ultimate Eagles’ collective experience, musicality and professionalism, and it’s easy to understand the band’s simple yet bold mission statement; to play the Eagles’ music better than anybody, anywhere. Second only to the Eagles themselves.

You’re looking at guys who have played every kind of venue, in many different countries, at every level; from clubs, to theatres, to festivals and stadiums. You’re looking at years of professional world touring experience by six of the most accomplished musicians you’re likely to find in any band; tribute or original. You’ve got award winners, rock stars, and players who have regularly featured in some of the biggest publications in music, not to mention some TV time as well. Top of The Pops? MTV? They’ve done that too.

Come and see them and judge for yourselves.

The Ultimate Eagles are:

Ryan Aston (Bonnie Tyler/Bryn Terfyl) – Drums/Vocals

Chris Childs (Paul Young/Beverly Craven/Thunder/Go West) – Bass/Vocals

Michael Lawrence (Chicago Blues Brothers/The Commitments) – Vocals/Guitar/Keyboards

Christian Phillips (Duffy/Bryn Terfyl/BBC last Choir Standing MD) – Vocals/Guitar/Keyboards/Banjo

As part of our ongoing dedication to supporting our local community by helping
those who want to gain or develop real-world skills and work experience in a
dynamic environment, The Gate offers a range of Internships.

WHY

Perfect for those who recognise they need ‘that something extra’, to stand out from the
crowd. More and more employers are
looking for experience as well as theoretical knowledge – this is the
opportunity to skip the catch 22, we offer the experience without needing you
to have it before you start.

In this internship you’ll be set projects, gain skills, access specialist
opportunities to experience and progress skills, on the job training, utilise
and trade on our name and reputation, be provided with a mentor/trainer and gain feedback plus
we’ll become an excellent reference source and will complete a full page letter
of reference which you can use and attach to as many portfolios, applications
and CVs as you wish!

Every internship is individually made to suit the
person, so are quite flexible, but whereas some of our other internships are
much more how The Gate can purely invest in people, these are more balanced in
what you receive should also be worked back. In simple terms, you have to work
to stay in it it rather than just receive.

WHAT

We have developed a wide range of 4-6 month, 16+ hours a week, internship
programmes, in fields such as Marketing; Events Management; Bar Management;
Graphic Design; Finance or Dance Tuition.

WHO

Anyone who has an understanding of the field you
want to gain experience in i.e. a degree or significant personal experience who
is looking for real-world practical experience in an almost totally self-funded
Arts Centre

Applicants will need to be willing to genuinely
invest themselves – while a minimum of 16 hours a week applies, we’re looking
for people who’ll get the job done well,
however it need to be with a courage to do it.

Your character and attitude should fit with the
ethos of the place and people

HOW

Email
info@thegate.org.uk
with PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIP APPLICATION in the subject line FAO Centre
Director. State what you would ideally like to do, the areas you’d like to be
involved in, what makes you a suitable candidate and attach your CV and any
references

The Gateway Programme

The Gateway Programme works with unemployed young people, building their character, confidence and attitudes, giving them opportunity for work experience, training and skills. It has now been launched after 2 extremely successful pilot programmes, where 36 individuals have been on the programme and 77% of those who completed the programme have found employment.

We’ve seen a real change in people’s lives, where participants have significantly grown in confidence and have had the time and support to think about their future and plan out and achieve the steps to reach where they want to go.

What is Pilates? Pilates is an exercise method, designed to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance. Based upon an anatomical understanding of the body’s muscular and skeletal systems, Pilates teaches a comprehensive exercise programme for the client. Classes will focus on specific areas individually whilst using exercises that integrate the whole body to re-educate and restore it to optimum muscular and skeletal function.

It is this holistic approach that sets Pilates apart from many other forms of exercise. Osteopaths, physiotherapists and general practitioners recommend Pilates as one of the safest forms of exercise today. Pilates can be beneficial for just about everyone, regardless of age and fitness level.

“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. In order to achieve happiness, it is imperative to gain mastery of your body. If at the age of 30 you are stiff and out of shape, you are old. If at 60 you are supple and strong then you are young” Joseph H. Pilates

All children have an innate love of music and we develop their musical skills in a fun and stimulating environment using percussion instruments, singing songs, rhyme, and musical games. The ideas are incorporated in age structured classes with a maximum of 12 children with their parent/carer who will join in the fun! Each child has their own box of instruments. NB: Pied Piper will finish on 13th December as it has a 13 week term.

BABY PIPERS Newborn – 15 months
Research shows that singing can play an important part in the “bonding process” between baby and parent. Letting your child feel the beat being tapped on parts of their body can help them develop the coordination to respond to it themselves.Classes last 30 minutes.

TODDLER PIPERS 16 months – 3 years
The fun structure of these classes enables your toddlers to explore music in a framework from which they can develop and consolidate musical concepts. Each child has their own box of instruments.

PRE-SCHOOL PIPERS over 3 years (CANCELLED)
Building on the skills introduced in the younger classes, the over 3’s also have the opportunity to make simple instruments and items relating to the session’s topic.. Each child has their own box of instruments.
Classes last 45 minutes.

Being Religious: For Better or Worse

Following on from January’s Open Session on “Does Morality Need God?”, this month’s Cafe examines the nature of religiosity, and how “being religious” changes individual lives and the societies in which they’re lived in a contemporary world where “secularization” is often assumed to be a dominant trend.

Drawing on empirical social scientific research conducted among members of evangelical churches in Wales, Francesca Montemaggi (City and Regional Planning, Cardiff University) will suggest that religion is not just a matter of belief, and can
be both socially beneficial and harmful in certain circumstances.

Further, in response to the idea that what motivates people to “do good” doesn’t matter so long as “good gets done”, she will consider, based on her research, whether religion motivates voluntary action in ways that secular values can’t match, and if so, how this happens.

For more details click here Philosophy Cafe ….

Philosophy Café is a space for sharing and exploring ideas, which affirms that we are all philosophers, even if we don’t quite know it yet. It aims to exploit the enthusiasm of academic philosophers and social scientists for their subject to create stimulating debates in which anyone can participate. Topics up for discussion will range from the ethics of global warming to the nature of democracy and freedom, and from corporate social responsibility to the rights and wrongs of new technologies such as genetic engineering and nanotechnology.
