History
The Gate is a beautifully converted Grade II listed building originally built in 1910 as a Presbyterian Church with the aim to serve the local community of Roath. Following a careful and loving restoration in 2001 much has changed about the building, but the heart remains the same. The venue now benefits from all the modern features needed to host events in a building brimming with period charm and character. Allow us to tell you a little about the spaces we have available for hire.
The Grand Theatre
The Grand Theatre, formerly an upper section of the church, is now a spectacular dining space seating up to 100 on circular tables, or up to 140 in rows. The Theatre has a built in dance floor, raised stage, fitted sound desk, PA system, video projector and a function bar. The beauty of the original church provides the perfect romantic setting for the celebration of your marriage and an area to inspire you and your guests.
The Dance Studio
The Dance Studio still features the original intricately carved pulpit and elaborate columns, adding character to this highly functional and versatile space. The room can seat up to 80 people for a meal, can be used as a welcome area for guests as they await the arrival of the bride and groom, or can even be converted into a children’s entertainment space and break-out room.
The Cafe Bar
Our stylish Cafe Bar has been formed in the original schoolroom, the oldest part of the building dating back to 1896. The Cafe is an excellent alternative for smaller private functions and family celebrations. The room has a built in bar, its own private entrance and can comfortably seat up to 70 people for a sit down meal. We also have Studio 3 at the back of the Theatre which has its own make-up room, toilets and shower and room divider, allowing you to split the space in two. Two Exhibition Galleries are housed in The Gate, the first around a wonderfully glazed screen and curved pew (originally the front entrance to the church), the other constructed against the original exterior stone wall which is still visible.

Hire Fees
Please choose a Hires Package to suit your requirements for the day.
Option 1 – £500
Includes the Dance Studio for welcome drinks the use of the Theatre for the Wedding breakfast, the Cafe Bar for a 1 hour period for a ‘break-out’ room and the Theatre for the evening reception.
Option 2 – £600
Includes the Dance Studio for welcome drinks and the use of the Theatre for the Wedding breakfast. The Dance Studio, or Cafe can be used as a break-out room for the evening and the Theatre used for the evening reception.
Option 3 – £700
Exclusive use of the whole building for your function including, Theatre, Studio 3, Dance Studio and the Cafe Bar.
